2007 COCKTAIL WORLD CUP
Queenstown
42 BELOW Vodka has announced Team Vegas as winners of the 2007 Cocktail World Cup, hosted in Queenstown, New Zealand. The 4th annual 42 Below Cocktail World Cup featured unique and challenging bartending competitions, as well as cocktail summits from some of the world’s most illustrious cocktail experts.

42 bartenders -- divided by country into teams of three -- competed in various events which culminated at a “shake-off” performance on an ice bar in Earnslaw Park. The finale was hosted by New Zealand TV star Mike Havock in front of a crowd of hundreds of enthusiasts.

The 42 contestants were judged by an international panel of experts, including film and TV star Jamie-Lynn Sigler, legendary New York mixologist Dale De Groff, UK TV star Andy Pearson, top London cocktail consultant Angus Winchester and Colin Peter Field.

“This year is number four for the CWC and it’s been bigger and better than ever,” said 42 BELOW founder Geoff Ross. “We’ve brought together the best bartending brains on the planet and in return, they’ve created some of the finest drinks on earth.

The Cocktail World Cup was won by Team Vegas, Anthony Alba, Eddie Perales, and Gaston Martinez, scoring a victory with “Amplextremo”. The Amplextrino was a two part “kitchen-style” cocktail and included complex ingredients such as potato puree, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, dolce de leche, 42 BELOW Vodka and a garnish of strawberries frozen with liquid nitrogen.

Cocktail ingredients ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous – New Zealand’s 42 BELOW Vodka, and other local ingredients such as feijoa, honey mead and wine were featured prominently, as well as bizarre additions such as sheep’s cheese, chilli and eggs. Eccentric methods dazzled the judges, from Team Ireland’s oversized green foam hats to Team China’s traditional Chinese outfits.

The New Zealand Team Moas placed second with a cocktail called the “42 BELOW Vineyard ‘Bacchus’ Riesling 2007”. The drink focused on ingredients including 42 BELOW Passion Fruit Flavoured Vodka, calvados, Central Otago verjus and German honey liquor.

In third place was Team England, who created a unique cocktail called “Corpse Reviver No. 42” containing 42 BELOW Manuka Honey Flavoured Vodka, 42 BELOW Vodka, brandy, grizzly bear honey cream and orange marmalade.

“I have had the most amazing week in New Zealand for the 42 BELOW Cocktail World Cup and topped it off by judging some of the most incredible cocktails I have ever tasted” said Jamie-Lynn Sigler. “I like the 42 BELOW brand for their fun and energetic approach to what typically would be a boring bartending competition.”
